Stories from the Wadden Sea is a permanent installation located in the Wadden Sea Centre, Ribe that explores the wider cultural aspects of the Wadden Sea UNESCO area. Through an eclectic mix of specially collected and curated objects, the spanning history from the first settlement is communicated through to the current day with emphasis on human’s impact and influence on the area.
At the centre of the space is a dramatically angled podium designed as a display and gathering point that showcases the collage and range of objects in the collection. A mirrored effect is created through a reflective dark glass surface where each object is carefully placed with focused lighting bespoke for each story. The objects act as a key to understanding the area and are further communicated with an integrated digital interface with a map of all object’s visitors can choose to explore in depth.
At the higher end of the podium is a unique rammed earth supporting structure built in-situ using locally sourced soil to form a site-specific material reference to the area. The podium carefully works with a cut and access point where the audience are invited to view the centre of the installation allowing for a guide to communicate and speak to wider groups. Surrounding the podium are dark treated walls that showcase animated motion projections of stories and interpretations of the objects.
The mood of the space is one of drama and reflection where the design works with stark contrasts in light, materiality and shadow casting reflections across the space. The object display is enhanced with a digital layer and interactivity that encourages further discovery and curiosity into the culture of the area and the beauty of each selected object coupled with their significance when viewed collectively.
