Sofonisba — History’s forgotten miracle
She was known as the greatest female painter of her time – a miracle among her peers, before she was written out of history and forgotten. The story of Sofonisba Anguissola’s long and active life during the Renaissance and into the Baroque period is extraordinary.
In the exhibition, a large part of Sofonisba’s known, surviving oeuvre, are gently yet dramatically lit to enhance the paintings vibrant and deep colors. The story of Sofonisba’s life and travels is presented through a circle of time, activating the visitors’ movement in the exhibition space.
The exhibition is divided into six chapters, and the context of each chapter is elaborated in an accompanying reading desk publication.
Similar to perspectival drawing techniques, a small self portrait of Sofonisba is through a installation reaching out into the exhibition space letting the visitors encounter the painting, and possible, the artist herself.
