The special exhibition Human Comes First, ‘The Astrid Noack Study Collection’ centres on one of the 20th century’s most distinctive figures in Danish art. Astrid Noack’s sculptures were constructed from the inside out with a deep focus on the human figure, proportion, and spatial presence.
JAC Studios designed the exhibition architecture including podiums and spatial fit-out and worked closely with the curatorial team from Holstebro Art Museum to realise the overall composition of works. The fit-out elements and displays are conceived for reuse and will become part of the Study Collection’s permanent display.
The design explores the role of the plinth, drawing inspiration from Noack’s own modelling stands and studio armatures. A series of timber-frame podiums reinterpret these structural geometries, creating a quiet and supportive backdrop. The use of pine introduces a subtle material contrast to the predominantly white plaster sculptures.
Through variations in height and scale, the display guides movement and frames individual works. Each sculpture is given space to be experienced on its own, while collectively forming a spatial atmosphere that echoes the character of Noack’s focus on human proportions and ways of perceiving body.
